Christmas Giving Tree
Ministry Leader: Lori Sheidler and Susan Hunter
During the Christmas season, there are brightly lit Christmas trees in the Church, each decorated with tree tags that indicate a name and a gift suggestion. St. Andrew’s Giving Tree program provides a happy Christmas to families in the parish and local Chandler community who are having difficulties making ends meet.
Are you a parish family in need of assistance this Christmas? We are currently accepting applications for the 2015 Christmas Giving Tree. RETURN, SORT AND DELIVER:
Return deadline: Because of our Foster Family event, scheduled on December 15, we will need all gifts returned to the parish no later than Noon on December 11. We ask that gifts be wrapped in boxes (gift bags get torn and are hard to stack); with the Star taped to the outside of the package.
Sorting and Delivering: On Sunday, December 11, following the 11:00 AM Mass, we will sort all of the gifts in Hennessey Hall and prepare them to be picked up by the agencies and families or prepare them for delivery that afternoon. We need many volunteers to help us with the Gift Sorting to help with set-up, sorting, bagging, runners, delivery and clean-up.
FOSTER FAMILY CHRISTMAS DINNER PARTY:
Every year, St. Andrew’s hosts a special Christmas dinner party for about 60 east valley foster families and it serves as a culmination event for all of our Fall holiday outreach to families in need. The evening includes dinner, Santa and Mrs. Claus, craft tables, face painting, music and much more! This years event will be held on Thursday, December 15 from 6:00-8:00 PM in Hennessey Hall.
Volunteers are needed to help make the event a success. We need assistance with set-up, decorating the hall, hosts/hostesses, greeters and servers, arts and crafts tables, Santa and elves, distributing gifts, and clean-up.
A NOTE ABOUT OUR AGENCIES
Many military children wake up with little to no gifts on Christmas morning because their families are struggling to make ends meet. For so many of these heroic families the holidays can be a stressful, disappointing time...especially for families of troops deployed over Christmas.
We have partnered with a social worker from the V.A. (who is a registered parishioner) to sponsor 40 military Veterans from the V.A. and their families who are really struggling to make ends meet this holiday season. Some are just the individual Veteran and others are entire families. We are thrilled to have this opportunity to give back to these Veterans who have sacrificed so much to protect our nation and ensure our freedom!
The mission of the Starbright Foundation is to rescue children and young adults from human sex trafficking and modern day slavery, as well as other dangerous and abusive environments in association with local law enforcement and governing authorities.
Starbright is establishing "safe houses" which provide maximum safety for endangered children, an environment for healing. They provide hope through crisis counseling, trauma therapy and education. Starbright offers new beginnings for these children through specialized care for victims of cultic, clergy, incest, mental, physical and sexual abuses, as well as comfort for their families. And they promote awareness in the community on the escalating crimes of child pornography and exploitation, which cause human suffering within our communities and nation.
We are partnering with Starbright to sponsor 25 girls and 25 boys for Christmas, youth who really need our help. Your generous gift will help Starbright continue to be the beacon of light for these children that are in need of love that doesn’t hurt and trust that won’t be broken.
HEALTHY FAMILIES ARIZONA (HFAz):
The mission of Healthy Families Arizona (HFAz)is to enhance parent-child relationships, optimize child health and development, build on family strengths and prevent child abuse and neglect. Program services are designed to strengthen families during the first five years of a child’s life when vital early brain development occurs. HFAz is a prevention program dedicated to supporting families in their quest to be the best parents they can be.
Through our Giving Tree program, we provide gift cards to some of these families to help them with groceries or Target/WalMart gift cards to help them get through the holidays.
